Jason was an integral part of
the group for 5 years. His contributions will not be forgotten and he was a
big part of us gaining the notoriety we have achieved. Jason's musical
influences, style, work ethic, and attitude were perfect for joining forces
in 2001. Jason has untouchable timing and feel. He graced the band with 5
string fretted and fretless basses and fantastic vocals. Musically, Jason is
inspired by the same mix of 60's-modern melodic rock. Besides his
musicianship, the thing that stood out the most about Jason was his
performances. We remain great friends and we look forward to seeing Jason's
next project.
Aaron Gottlieb has played on and
off with BCB since 1998. Aaron is the personification of raw, unbridled
talent, and has an amazing energy at live shows. He is currently taking up
residence in Nashville, TN and showing some of those country dudes how its
done. He is frequently seen crashing a BCB gig when visiting his home town.
Aaron and Brian met in the local hangout, Downtown Joe's, where he decided
he couldn't hear Brian sing without adding a backup to every line. That
started a beautiful relationship and he is still close buddies with the
band. On an interesting footnote, Aaron's band at the time was with "Idle
Society", which consisted of Dan and Jason from BCB. Even more ironically,
Aaron had recently replaced BCB drummer Dave in that band. Yes, Napa is a
small musical town and Brian doesn't deny accusations that he hogs the top
talent from the Napa Valley. Anyone who has met Aaron knows he is a silly
little guy. Aaron is also a writer and co-wrote "Sea of Lies" with Brian.
These are they guys that were in the
band from 1998-2001 whose incredible musicianship was memorialized on "Within
Without".
Andrew Lion was ready, willing,
and able when Brian finally broke down and admitted he needed more than a
sequencer and drum machine to be musically satisfied. Actually, Andrew and
Brian met in high school in 1984. In 1989, Andrew would occasionally go see
Brian's band play gigs. Then in 1993, Brian and Andrew would run into each
other every week on BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit). They finally
exchanged numbers and started to develop a friendship. Andrew's influences
are also rooted in the 60's. He grew up being inspired by the Beatles,
Cream, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, and particularly John Paul Jones from Led
Zepplin. Andrew is known for his melodic fretless five-string bass, on which
he squeezes out gut-wrenching notes that hold down the bottom while hitting
the soul. He also whips out the six-string bass when he has string envy and
wants to lay down the funky, slappy finger-style. Andrew has developed into
a strong writer as well and co-wrote some songs with Brian and the other BCB
players on "Within Without".
Rob met Brian in 1995 when at
the request of Brian's then roommate, Wes, Brian went to go see this band
called "None of the Above". Anyway, None of the Above were quite established
and were opening shows for Cake, Green Day, No Doubt, and Train. Brian
became a big fan of Rob's band and when BCB began their search for a
guitarist, Rob was Brian's first phone call. Rob shares Brian's early
musical childhood memory of banging away at Beatles tunes on a piece-of-crap
nylon string guitar instead of the drums they always wanted. His influences
are like Brian and Andrew, deeply rooted in the 60's. Rob grew up listening
to Cream/Clapton, Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Yes, Jeff Beck. Rob's favorite modern
groups would include, Stone Temple Pilots, Live, and Radiohead. He is a
fantastic writer, performer, and always adds that perfect note that the song
needed. He is known for his stylish wah-wah, soaring melodic leads, his cool
slide guitar, and his tardiness. Rob is currently focusing his musical
efforts with Andrew in their new band Spoke.
Paul is a cool guy who lays down
the groove, and know when and what to play. He is concerned about the song
first and what is best for the band not just his parts. Paul's influences
are varied. He started off listening to Peter Criss from Kiss. As time went
on, he got into Steve Smith, Terry Bozzio, Jelly Bean Johnson, Tony
Thompson, Vinnie Coaliuta, Deep Purple, the Beach Boys, Robin Trower, Jimmy
Jam/Terry Lewis, Prince, Bootsy Collins, Dennis Chambers, and Fleetwood Mac.
During the day, Paul manages Lemmon Percussion, "San Jose's only pro drum
shop". He is always involved in drums and music has developed friendships
with a number of drum luminaries, such as Terry Bozzio, Steve Smith, Armondo
Perraza, and Raul Rekow. From time to time, he organizes clinics with these
folks. Paul currently plays with Rubber Side Down.
